Warren Buffett, the leader behind Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRKA) (NYSE: BRKB), ranks among the finest investors in history. He harbors concerns about numerous matters. Last year he noted rising unease over the U.S. budget shortfall and debt burden.

"I think the challenge of managing revenue and expenses in government is the issue that is never completely resolved and has seriously damaged ... many societies. And I do not believe we are protected from it and we have approached it closely," Buffett explained.

"We are pursuing an approach that cannot continue, and it carries the risk of becoming unmanageable beyond a certain stage," he continued, observing that elevated inflation levels, possibly surpassing recent experiences, might emerge as the final outcome.

Surprisingly, none of these issues disturb Buffett at night. In 2015 he was asked outright: "Does anything disturb you at night?" This is his reply:

The sole matter that ever causes me regret involves friends or family facing sickness or loss. You never recover from that, yet nothing besides other people's discomfort or serious sickness, or my own if I felt awful, or in the worst case death. And with age more friends pass away. ... [T]here exists no simple fix for how you regard that. Yet nothing disturbs me at night. It never has.

Buffett's guidance remains typically insightful. It also stems from his investment approach. Buffett is famous for extended ownership periods, frequently holding companies for a lifetime. He grants executives freedom to run operations without interference, steering clear of excessive oversight. His enduring collaborators, including Charlie Munger, often turn into trusted companions.

Ultimately Buffett likely pays little attention to daily or weekly portfolio shifts. He focuses on extended horizons. With such a perspective, falling asleep each evening probably comes more readily.
