Warren Buffett has made it clear that he is not enthusiastic about the present market conditions.

At the 2026 Berkshire Hathaway shareholder meeting the now retired CEO added another remark to his list of comments for anyone still uncertain about his stance: We have never seen people in a more gambling oriented mood than now.

To be clear those who purchase stocks or exchange traded funds through an automatic investment plan such as a 401k are not considered gamblers. They are simply adhering to a long term approach that calls for consistent investing irrespective of price levels. That approach makes sense.

However other investors may be assuming unnecessary risks with their selections and they fall into two categories.

The expensive stock pickers

Disregarding fundamentals can prove costly. The short term leverage option gamblers

This category involves genuine casino style conduct. Nearly 700 new ETFs have been introduced so far in 2026. About 200 fall into leveraged or inverse categories. Most of these focus on individual stocks.

Since the start of 2025 more than 200 ETFs have appeared under the synthetic income designation which covers zero days to expiration option income approaches and other very high yield targets.

At their best these offerings amount to short term trading tactics. At their worst they represent complicated derivative strategies that most investors cannot readily explain. These products attract buyers with promises of amplified returns or unusually high yields in some cases distribution rates exceed 100 percent.

Allocating funds to such vehicles may amount to gambling. They are intricate and frequently difficult to understand making them unsuitable for most portfolios.

What long term investors should focus on instead

The straightforward solution is to invest in areas you understand. The abundance of these ETFs underscores the growing need for investors to perform thorough research when selecting stocks and ETFs. Maintaining a long term perspective helps reduce investing risk.

Sound portfolios should include a range of asset classes that match an investor objectives risk tolerance and time frame. Emphasizing quality while staying aware of risk exposures tends to produce positive results.
