Famous investor Warren Buffett passed the chief executive role to Greg Abel at the close of 2025 while remaining chairman. Yet the careful stance he developed over years persists. By the end of the first quarter, Berkshire cash and short-term Treasury bills hit a record near $397 billion.

This prompts the query: What does such a large reserve from a disciplined conglomerate with a strong record of sound investments indicate about current price levels?

A record reserve and consistent seller

Berkshire's balance sheet at March end showed roughly $58.1 billion in cash and equivalents along with about $339 billion in short-term U.S. Treasury bills. Combined, nearly $397 billion rests in the safest holdings, representing over one-third of the company's total market value. By Berkshire metrics, cash has never reached this proportion of the firm.

Berkshire continues to grow the total. During the first quarter the company sold around $24 billion in stocks and purchased only about $16 billion. This extends a net-selling run now exceeding three years.

The cash does not sit idle. With recent Treasury yields near 3.7 percent, the holdings generate roughly $12 billion annually in interest, exceeding yearly profits at many S&P 500 firms.

This stance does not represent a direct market prediction. Buffett has long described cash as flexibility to act quickly when attractive opportunities arise, and Berkshire has simply not located enough appealing purchases at present prices. The company must deploy tens of billions to influence its results, allowing it to await favorable terms that smaller investors might accept earlier.

Still, when the leading value investor of recent decades prefers a risk-free 3.7 percent return over additional holdings, that choice conveys information. It can be viewed as a subtle signal on valuations.

Prior signals from cash levels

Berkshire has allowed cash to accumulate before. In the late 1990s, as technology shares surged, Buffett avoided the enthusiasm and faced criticism until the dot-com decline confirmed the approach.

Cash rose again before the 2008 financial crisis. Once prices declined, Berkshire deployed funds vigorously, notably through a $5 billion commitment to Goldman Sachs in September 2008 that delivered a 10 percent dividend on terms unavailable to typical investors.

The pattern holds steady. Berkshire gathers cash amid scarce bargains then deploys it when fear generates opportunities.

This does not guarantee an imminent downturn. Buffett has cautioned against reading his cash position as a market prediction, and Berkshire has maintained substantial cash during periods when equities continued rising.

What differs now is the decision maker for deployment. Abel, rather than Buffett, primarily determines when the reserve is used. His allocation choices may prove the largest influence on Berkshire results over coming years, and he has followed the same careful approach so far. He has acquired some Alphabet shares and approved a purchase of Taylor Morrison Home. Yet through Q1 end, Berkshire stayed a net seller of stocks.

So what does this convey to investors? Not that a crash looms. Buffett would likely reject that view first. It indicates that patience makes sense when prices sit this elevated, and that Berkshire has positioned itself quietly to respond if sentiment shifts.
