Yet the chief concern with shrinking U.S. stockpiles is that exports at this intensity cannot continue without eventually requiring cuts. By the close of May, holdings at Cushing, a vital U.S. energy center, reached 22.4 million barrels after falling four million barrels since February. Observers note that levels near 20 million barrels may trigger operational difficulties for energy firms.

Thus U.S. supplies offer only a short-term fix for the larger issue stemming from Middle East unrest. Available oil remains insufficient to meet needs, aligning with warnings from Chevron and Exxon. As a commodity, oil prices climb when supply tightens while demand stays strong.
