Shares of Oklo (NYSE: OKLO) dropped 27 percent in the first half of 2026, based on figures from S&P Global Market Intelligence. The developer of advanced nuclear reactors faces cooling enthusiasm after a strong surge in 2025. It is also issuing additional shares at current prices to secure more capital. Although the shares have risen 386 percent over the past five years, they sit 71 percent below the peak reached in 2025.

Significant share dilution and extended path to market

Oklo focuses on developing next-generation nuclear reactor technology. Its Aurora Powerhouse design targets direct power supply for data centers and industrial facilities, reducing strain on the broader electrical grid serving residential customers.

However, the Aurora design still awaits approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, indicating several years remain before commercial construction can begin. The firm also pursues smaller-scale activities in radioisotope output and fuel recycling, yet these efforts represent limited prospects compared with full reactor deployment.

Generating no revenue at present, Oklo continues to consume cash and has turned to equity sales to strengthen its financial position. This approach has more than doubled shares outstanding in recent years. Trailing twelve-month free cash flow stands at negative $154 million, marking the steepest cash usage in company history.

Beyond these operational issues, Oklo benefited substantially from earlier excitement around nuclear plays linked to AI-driven power demand. That momentum has begun to ease, contributing to share weakness in 2026.

Evaluating the current opportunity

On the positive side, Oklo held more than $2 billion in cash and equivalents at the close of the first quarter, with the balance likely higher by quarter end. This reserve provides extended runway to pursue regulatory approval without immediate funding pressure.

Conversely, nuclear development remains a challenging environment marked by lengthy timelines that can hinder newer entrants. Trading at an $8.5 billion market capitalization with no current sales, Oklo stock appears unsuitable for purchase during this year's decline.
