Oil prices have since retreated over the past two months to levels near pre-conflict readings. This shift produced a 15% pullback in the ETF from its yearly high, though it remains up more than 20% for 2026 overall.

Looking ahead, the environment has reversed. When oil exceeded $100 amid conflict and inflation worries, further gains in energy equities appeared constrained. The Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF serves as a classic defensive quality holding. It focuses on firms that have increased dividends annually for at least ten years, reflecting durable models and reliable cash generation that can support portfolios across varying conditions.

Its growth orientation adds appeal at present. Market-cap weighting leads to sizable positions in names such as Apple, Microsoft, and Broadcom. Technology comprises roughly 28% of holdings, exceeding typical dividend funds and offering greater upside in a rising market.

This mix should perform well through the second half of 2026, while the quality emphasis provides a measure of downside cushion if conditions shift.
