Kevin Warsh adopts a firm line on rising prices. The bond market remains unconvinced.

When the Federal Reserve and fixed-income traders clash, recall the observation from political strategist James Carville:

"I used to think that if there was reincarnation, I wanted to come back as the President or the Pope or a .400 baseball hitter. But now I would want to come back as the bond market. You can intimidate everybody."

Until this standoff resolves, expect continued swings in prices.

UPS Shares Remain Under Pressure

Most market participants hold a negative view on United Parcel Service (UPS), and this time the consensus appears accurate. Shares fell following the July 28 results even though full-year revenue targets were lifted.

The decline lifted the indicated yield to 6.4 percent. A yield that elevated for a well-known name in a crowded sector often signals caution.

The elevated yield rests on thin support: Dividends consumed 99 percent of free cash flow over the past twelve months. Looking ahead, guidance points to 5.5 billion dollars in FCF against 5.4 billion dollars in distributions. Free cash flow serves as our preferred measure because it resists easy distortion compared with reported earnings.

This tight coverage appears in the muted growth of the payout. The usual upward pull on price from rising distributions has faded:

This Coverage Shortfall Offers Little Appeal

Further, the chief financial officer stated during the earnings call that no increase is planned for the current year.

Leadership has emphasized efforts to reduce reliance on lower-margin Amazon volume in favor of higher-margin healthcare shipments. That shift lifted non-GAAP operating margins to 9.2 percent from 8.8 percent a year earlier.

The strategy makes sense, yet competitors pursue similar paths. Amazon itself continues expanding its delivery network and now leads the parcel sector in the United States, ahead of the Postal Service according to recent data.

The result is a carrier distancing itself from a large client that has turned into a direct competitor. That combination leaves little reason to remain invested.

Nike May Lose Aristocrat Standing Soon

Nike (NKE) offers a modest 3.8 percent yield, yet the dividend-growth record deserves attention.

The firm has increased its distribution each year for twenty-four consecutive years. Reaching Aristocrat status requires one more annual raise. Following prior timing, the key increase could arrive in November.

Even so, the stock may not keep that status for long.

At present the distribution exceeds the trailing twelve months of free cash flow by 10 percent. Although the ratio has improved recently, the longer-term direction shows steady deterioration from just 27 percent five years earlier:

Growth in the payout has slowed accordingly. The share price diverged from the distribution trajectory years ago once investors recognized limited room for further increases:

Market Participants Anticipated Nike Payout Limits

Both UPS and Nike illustrate a key point about payout momentum: Rising distributions support prices only when investors retain confidence in ongoing growth. That is why we require both expanding and accelerating payouts before considering names for our dividend-growth service.

What has hindered Nike? Tariffs have weighed on results. The company anticipates 986 million dollars in refunds after the Supreme Court invalidated certain levies. While that sum may support the distribution and secure Aristocrat entry, it provides little beyond that.

A larger issue persists: Sales in China continue to soften as shoppers shift toward lower-cost local alternatives. Once such habits form, reversing them proves difficult.

The shares have declined 31 percent year to date and 72 percent over five years. The optimal moment to exit occurred earlier. The next best moment is today.

This 5.8 Percent Yield Depends on Unpredictable Conditions

Some investors prefer owning shares of familiar brands. Fans of certain technology names illustrate the pattern.

Skiers and snowboarders should avoid applying that approach to Vail Resorts (MTN). The shares yield 5.8 percent, yet results hinge on winter snowfall that varies widely.

A dry season across the western United States reduced revenue last year and prompted lower forward targets. That same dry period has also reduced season-pass sales for the 2026-2027 season. Sales are 10 percent lower than the prior period, days sold are down 8 percent, and collected revenue is off 5 percent.

These factors have reduced cash generation, pushing the payout ratio to an unsustainable 183 percent of free cash flow. Such a level is concerning for an operator that must continually fund improvements to draw visitors.

Consequently the distribution has stalled and investors have lost confidence in future growth. The chart below shows steady selling since the pandemic period:

Vail Payout Momentum Has Weakened

The balance sheet offers no relief: Long-term debt has risen from 3 billion dollars to 3.22 billion dollars over three years while cash and short-term investments have fallen from 573 million dollars to 387 million dollars. The resulting net debt of 2.83 billion dollars exceeds comfortable levels for a firm valued at 5.4 billion dollars.

Our view is that hoping for recovery resembles waiting in an endless line. Sell if you own it.
