Each month the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes a fresh CPI-W value that shows the cost of a typical basket of goods and services. Comparing successive CPI-W readings reveals the pace of rising expenses.

The Social Security Administration averages the CPI-W values for July, August, and September of the present year, then contrasts that average with the prior year's matching quarter. The resulting percentage change becomes the COLA.

The 2025 readings are already available, yet the third quarter of 2026 has not started. As new data arrives, a clearer picture of the 2027 COLA will emerge.
