Writing about the stock market teaches many lessons, and I have done so for decades. As a contributor to The Motley Fool since 1995, I have analyzed numerous firms. I still feel excitement when spotting a fresh investment idea. It can also prove humbling, as many stocks I discussed over 30 years ago have vanished.

One of the few companies I followed three decades ago that continues to thrive is Disney (NYSE: DIS). The stock chart does not reflect this strength. Shares have fallen 10 percent over the past year while the broader market hits new peaks. Disney stock has lost nearly half its value since its high point a little over five years ago.

I spot potential in the indifference. Here is why my positive view on the House of Mouse as an investment has never been firmer.

Even miracles take a little time

This should prove an excellent period for Disney. Content reigns supreme once more after successive years of bidding wars among industry leaders for smaller studios. Disney ranked among the first to make its streaming operations profitable, emerging from losses more than two years ago. The entertainment division, which includes its shrinking legacy media networks aside from ESPN, rising streaming services, and studio productions, now shows growth on both revenue and profit lines. Revenue for the entertainment segment climbed 6 percent in its most recent quarter and 7 percent over the first nine months of the fiscal year.

Its leisure offerings, anchored by theme park resorts and cruise ships, perform even stronger. Disney's experiences segment posted a 10 percent revenue gain, with operating profit up 20 percent in the latest quarter. While smaller theme park firms and larger cruise operators slow down, Disney advances. The experiences business generated 39 percent of the company's revenue yet a stronger 61 percent of its segment operating profit through the first three quarters of this fiscal year.

Whistle while you work

Disney's ecosystem stands unmatched among media peers. It does not matter where one enters the powerful cycle, whether through movies, theme parks, cruise ships, or televised content. Once engaged with one area, it connects to the others.

The entertainment leader runs the world's most visited gated attractions. Its distinctive cruise line business attracts a growing audience ready to pay premiums over standard operators. It also dominates the box office. Since 2024, Disney has released more than half of the films that exceeded 1 billion dollars in global ticket sales.

Excelling across most operations does not automatically make a strong company a strong investment. Valuation matters, and here Disney's improving results, paired with its declining share price, align favorably.

Disney now trades at less than 16 times what it should earn on an adjusted basis for the fiscal year ending next month, based on its recent guidance projecting 16 percent bottom-line growth. An extra week appears in the current fiscal year. Analysts project adjusted earnings to rise 8 percent in fiscal 2027, consistent with Disney's aim for double-digit growth in the following year once adjusting for the extra week in fiscal 2026.

All signs point to Disney trading at 14.5 times forward earnings. That represents an attractive price for a quality stock. The outlook brightens further given that Disney has topped Wall Street profit estimates for more than a year.

Disney is not flawless. It will face risks from any global economic slowdown. It could encounter a lull in content production. Yet much of that appears priced into the shares at today's attractive entry point. I have held Disney shares for even longer than the 30 years spent covering the iconic company.
