Strategy (NASDAQ: MSTR) achieved major gains from 2024 through 2025 by issuing shares and debt to acquire Bitcoin. With Bitcoin prices climbing steadily, the firm's large holdings increased in value, enabling further capital raises and building a substantial Bitcoin reserve through this self-reinforcing process.

Conditions have shifted recently. Bitcoin has dropped almost 50 percent from its high last year, and Strategy has stopped acquiring more during the decline. The company's most recent 8-K report indicates no Bitcoin buys over the past four weeks. Instead, it has issued shares to build cash holdings up to 3.2 billion dollars.

Building up the balance sheet offers benefits

Bitcoin remains highly volatile, so a sharp drop was likely inevitable. While individual buyers might seize dips, Strategy manages billions in assets. Buying opportunistically would help, yet the firm is emphasizing financial stability and readiness if Bitcoin falls further.

Strategy holds 843,775 BTC with an average purchase price of 75,476 dollars per coin. This leaves the company with unrealized losses. It faces ongoing costs from debt interest and preferred share dividends. Prices are unpredictable, so the depth or duration of any further decline remains unknown.

Extra cash creates protection against worst-case outcomes, such as forced sales at unfavorable prices to cover payments.

Yet this reveals a limitation in Strategy's model

Strategy's decision to pause buys is understandable, but it raises questions. As a Bitcoin-focused treasury, the firm could best serve shareholders by adding coins at the lowest possible average cost. If its method of raising funds and buying Bitcoin succeeds only during price increases, that signals a potential issue.

It is reasonable to ask what lasting value the current model provides beyond a leveraged wager on higher Bitcoin prices. Strategy mainly uses debt and equity issuances to buy BTC. Selling shares dilutes owners and becomes less efficient at lower prices, requiring more shares to raise equivalent capital.

Strategy acts wisely by building reserves, but an extended Bitcoin downturn poses serious risks to operations. Ultimately, investors may prefer direct Bitcoin ownership or a spot Bitcoin ETF.
