Space Exploration Technologies (NASDAQ: SPCX) ended trading at 118.24 dollars per share on July 23, down 48 percent from its record peak of 225.64 dollars reached on June 16, the third session following its June 12 initial public offering.

Yet multiple widely held exchange traded funds will keep purchasing SpaceX shares even amid further price declines due to their float based weighting approaches. The float represents shares available for public trading on the Nasdaq. These weighting systems will generate significant ongoing demand for SpaceX over coming months as available shares expand.

SpaceX IPO altered standard patterns

Current top companies by market value all debuted publicly at fractions of their present size. Buyers of Apple and Microsoft shares on the Nasdaq during the 1980s saw substantial gains. SpaceX followed a different path.

It achieved megacap status through private funding rounds spanning multiple decades. By the time it listed publicly the valuation required new index and ETF rules to build positions gradually without inflating prices artificially.

The approach uses float adjusted market cap so the Nasdaq 100 and funds such as Invesco QQQ Trust, Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (NYSEMKT: VTI), Vanguard Growth ETF, Vanguard Mega Cap Growth ETF and others acquire SpaceX based on a multiple of its float instead of total market value. As of June 30 SpaceX ranked as the 110th largest position in the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF just behind ServiceNow even though its market cap exceeded ServiceNow by more than 15 times.

ETFs set to acquire additional SpaceX shares

SpaceX float is poised to grow markedly in August starting two days after its Aug. 4 second quarter 2026 earnings release.

On Aug. 6 20 percent of early release eligible shares will become available which could sharply expand the float if insiders sell on the Nasdaq. Once the float reaches a sufficient portion of outstanding shares SpaceX will shift to full market cap weighting roughly the size of Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META). This shift means that before year end SpaceX will rank among the top three holdings in the Vanguard Communications Services ETF (NYSEMKT: VOX) a top 10 position in the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF Vanguard Growth ETF Vanguard Mega Cap Growth ETF Vanguard Russell 1000 ETF Vanguard Russell 1000 Growth ETF and the Vanguard Large Cap ETF and likely a top 15 holding in the Vanguard Total World Stock ETF.

To show the scale of ETF buying consider that as of June 30 nine Vanguard ETFs together owned 6.1 billion dollars of SpaceX stock. SpaceX raised 85.7 billion dollars by issuing 555 million shares at 135 dollars each plus underwriter options. The Vanguard ETF positions alone represented 7.1 percent of SpaceX initial float excluding Invesco QQQ Trust and other managers.

The Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF alone holds 39.3 billion dollars in Meta Platforms shares which has a comparable market cap to SpaceX. Once float allows full market cap weighting the fund will own nearly 3 percent of SpaceX outstanding shares. Upon S and P 500 inclusion expected next June the three largest S and P 500 ETFs by assets the Vanguard S and P 500 ETF the iShares Core S and P 500 ETF and the SPDR S and P 500 ETF Trust are projected to hold over 5 percent of SpaceX shares collectively.

ETF demand for major IPOs extends beyond SpaceX

Two main implications arise for investors from ETF influence on SpaceX.

First ETFs will keep accumulating SpaceX as float expands even if the share price declines which reverses typical ETF behavior. For instance Micron Technology comprised 1.8 percent of the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF as of June 30 ahead of Meta Platforms despite a smaller market cap simply due to strong first half performance.

Second despite ETF buying power SpaceX shares declined sharply in July. The stock sits well below its highs and about 12 percent under the IPO price even after a 300 dollar per share target from Morgan Stanley. This signals investor caution on valuation especially ahead of insider share unlock periods.

SpaceX stands apart in addressable market and technology yet its public debut at elevated valuation invited immediate volatility. Investors may review portfolios to check ETF holdings that will continue adding SpaceX shares and ensure comfort with the pattern which is likely to recur with Anthropic and OpenAI listings.
