America's top retirement program Social Security frequently makes history. Last year marked its 90th year since enactment plus the first time the typical monthly retired-worker benefit crossed the $2,000 mark.

Monthly inflation figures through May had suggested Social Security's 2027 COLA would stand out. The COLA functions as the yearly boost that helps beneficiaries keep pace with rising prices.

Yet the June inflation release altered the outlook for next year's COLA. Even so a favorable development absent since 2023 remains likely for select seniors in 2027.

Projected COLA increase tied to policy actions is easing

Social Security benefits climbed 2.8 percent this year partly because of tariff measures enacted in April 2025. Although the Supreme Court later struck down many tariffs they had lifted prices and supported the 2026 COLA.

For another straight year Social Security's COLA appears headed for an additional lift from policy developments. Military actions involving Iran began in late February and led to closure of the Strait of Hormuz. That step restricted about one-fifth of global crude oil supply and drove energy costs higher. Trailing twelve-month inflation rose from 2.4 percent to 4.2 percent between February and May.

After the May report an independent analyst raised the 2027 COLA projection to 4.7 percent which would have ranked among the largest increases since 1991. The June inflation update released July 14 reversed that path. Headline inflation fell to 3.5 percent and core inflation dropped to 2.6 percent with a notable month-over-month decline.

Lower crude oil prices in June reduced trailing twelve-month inflation to 3.5 percent prompting the analyst to lower the 2027 COLA forecast to 3.7 percent. While still sizable compared with recent decades the figure no longer qualifies as a major historic jump.

Should the estimate hold the average retired worker would see a monthly increase of roughly 77 dollars. Disability and survivor beneficiaries would each gain about 60 dollars per month.

A positive offset remains possible for some retirees in 2027

Although beneficiaries have received COLAs nearly every year since 1975 many retirees have experienced gradual erosion of purchasing power since 2000. An analysis covering 2010 through 2024 showed seniors lost about 20 percent of buying power in their Social Security income. The shortfall arises because the CPI-W index used for COLAs reflects spending patterns of working-age urban employees rather than older adults.

Medical and housing costs that weigh heavily on retirees receive less emphasis in the CPI-W. In addition Medicare Part B premiums have frequently offset COLA gains throughout the century. Part B premiums rose 5.9 percent 5.9 percent and 9.7 percent over 2024-2026 while COLAs for those years were 3.2 percent 2.5 percent and 2.8 percent.

The latest Medicare Trustees Report projects the standard Part B premium at 209.50 dollars monthly for next year an increase of 6.60 dollars or 3.25 percent. This marks the first time since 2023 that the COLA percentage is expected to exceed the Part B premium rise. With estimates still subject to change the current outlook suggests some retirees could keep a larger share of their 2027 COLA and begin to recover a portion of prior purchasing-power losses.
