Rocket Lab (NASDAQ: RKLB) has enjoyed a strong run of contract announcements. On Tuesday the space company revealed a $397 million award from the U.S. Space Force to build launch and operate a constellation of its flat-panel Flatellite satellites for the Space-Based Airborne Moving Target Indicator program a system designed to track airborne threats in real time from orbit.

Shares rose about 6 percent on the day although the news arrived after the closing bell. The award followed just eight days after another major win. On July 27 Rocket Lab announced a $266 million contract with the Space Force Rocket Systems Launch Program for suborbital launches the largest launch contract in company history.

Together the two awards total $663 million. For a company that guided for second-quarter revenue of $225 million to $240 million that amount represents nearly three quarters of work secured in about a week.

Yet the more revealing detail lies in how the contracts split. One can proceed on rockets the company already operates. The other depends on Neutron a rocket that has never flown.

The funding that does not wait

The $266 million contract stands as firm new business for a launch provider. It includes 12 guaranteed suborbital missions for missile defense testing with options that could raise the total to 18. Rocket Lab has not specified the vehicle but its suborbital flights currently use HASTE a variant of its Electron rocket. Those two vehicles completed a record 21 missions last year with full success meaning this work will almost certainly use proven hardware. The missions will depart from a new launch site at the Pacific Spaceport Complex-Alaska on Kodiak Island with the first flight expected by the end of 2026.

The win builds on an already solid performance. In the first quarter Rocket Lab reported record revenue of $200.3 million up 63.5 percent from a year earlier and faster than the 38 percent growth seen for full-year 2025. Backlog the value of contracts still to be completed rose 20.2 percent from the prior quarter to $2.2 billion also a record. Guidance points to another revenue record in the second quarter.

Further the company sold more launches in the first quarter of 2026 than across all of 2025 lifting its manifest past 70 contracted missions. It closed the quarter with access to more than $2 billion in total liquidity.

The funding that waits on Neutron

The $397 million award is larger and represents a different business line. Rocket Lab will not only provide the launch but will also build the satellites and operate them in orbit aligning with the vertically integrated approach the company has pursued. The total contract value includes an option for additional Flatellites.

Rocket Lab is honored to play a key role in the SB-AMTI program which is critical to expanding the Space Force layered resilient tracking architecture founder and CEO Sir Peter Beck said in the announcement.

The challenge centers on the rocket. The satellites are planned to fly on Neutron Rocket Lab larger launch vehicle which has not yet flown. Neutron marks the company entry into the medium-lift launch market currently led by SpaceX. In its first-quarter update the company stated Neutron remains on track for a debut launch later this year although the schedule has slipped before the first flight was previously targeted for 2025. Any further delay could shift some revenue from this award.

Both wins arrived after the second quarter ended on June 30 so they will not appear in results Rocket Lab reports next Monday Aug. 10. Attention in those results will focus on updates about Neutron more than the revenue figure because the first flight determines whether the larger award moves from promise to realized business.

The division between the contracts remains important at the current valuation. At a market capitalization of about $45 billion Rocket Lab trades at more than 65 times its trailing-12-month revenue of about $680 million.

The company has not yet reached net income and posted a loss of about $183 million over that period. As of Tuesday close shares stood about 51 percent below their 52-week high of $151.

Thus the $663 million breaks down clearly with $266 million tied to rockets already in service and $397 million dependent on a first flight. Until Neutron flies watching this growth stock from the sidelines appears prudent. A successful debut however could alter that view.
