Rivian (NASDAQ: RIVN) stock fell 12.3 percent in July according to data from S and P Global Market Intelligence after the electric vehicle maker announced it sold an additional 75 million shares to raise fresh capital.

Rivian is increasing output of its new R2 vehicle yet the company continues to use substantial cash while trying to stabilize amid tough conditions in the EV sector.

Rivian funding raise raises shareholder worries

The company sold more than 75 million new Rivian shares at 15.50 dollars each last month raising roughly 1.2 billion dollars. Underwriters may also buy an extra 11.25 million shares of common stock.

Rivian stated in a release that the new funds would support general corporate needs and equity contributions for a loan from the U.S. Department of Energy.

Shareholders disliked two aspects of the sale. Issuing new stock dilutes current holdings and the fact that Rivian needed to sell shares because of high cash use also concerned them.

Management noted that 2026 capital expenditures will range from 1.7 billion to 1.8 billion dollars. The firm is scaling production of its lower priced R2 model which many see as critical for future success.

Investors in various industries now doubt that heavy spending will lead to profits. For Rivian the challenge grows as U.S. buyers move toward hybrid models and away from pure EVs.

Positive developments for Rivian

Although the share sale drew criticism Rivian shows progress. Delivery guidance for 2026 stands at 65 000 to 70 000 vehicles up from 42 247 deliveries in 2025.

While capital spending stays elevated management cut full year guidance by 250 million dollars at the midpoint citing project efficiencies and spending timing.

Rivian posted a gross profit of 179 million dollars in the second quarter versus a loss of 206 million dollars in the same quarter last year.

The company still faces a long path to increase R2 model sales and persuade more customers that electric vehicles justify their price.
