Rivian Automotive (NASDAQ:RIVN) earns most of its revenue through the design engineering and production of electric pickup trucks sport utility vehicles for consumers and commercial delivery vans.

The firm began customer deliveries of a mid size model and formed a battery storage partnership while posting a net income margin of negative 30 percent for the quarter ended March 31 2026.

Tesla: Growing the Core Business

Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) generates revenue mainly by producing and selling electric vehicles plus automotive regulatory credits non warranty services and full energy generation and storage offerings.

After recalling select vehicles due to missing labels and teaming up on home energy projects the company posted an EBIT margin of 4 percent for the quarter ended March 31 2026.

Foolish Take

Reviewing revenue patterns for these two electric vehicle makers yields useful perspectives though it does not capture every factor. Rivian has achieved gradual sales growth from the second quarter of 2024 onward. In the first quarter its $1.4 billion total marked a solid 11 percent year over year rise. Yet without Tesla scale Rivian stays unprofitable posting a first quarter operating loss of $655 million.

Over the same span Tesla showed uneven revenue expansion even with its early lead in the electric vehicle space. This highlights growing rivalry as other car makers launched their own electric models. Still Tesla delivered first quarter operating income of $941 million reflecting a strong 136 percent year over year gain.

Tesla is now shifting focus toward autonomous vehicles and robots which may open fresh revenue streams. Rivian meanwhile has pursued ties such as with Volkswagen to sustain operations. Tesla stronger finances vertically integrated approach and promising growth plans position it well ahead of Rivian in the electric vehicle sector.
