High earners lose the option for tax-deferred catch-up contributions

The additional funds above $24,500 that adults over 50 may add to their 401(k)s are called catch-up contributions. These help offset earlier periods when savings fell short of goals.

Most adults may direct catch-up contributions to traditional or Roth 401(k)s when both options exist. Starting in 2026, however, those earning $150,000 or higher cannot place catch-up contributions into tax-deferred 401(k)s. They must route these extra amounts through Roth 401(k)s or cease contributions for the year if no Roth option is available.

This requirement means high earners pay taxes on part of their retirement savings in the contribution year, increasing that year's tax obligation. The benefit appears later when withdrawals during retirement occur without taxes or penalties. Roth balances also provide more flexibility in managing retirement tax exposure and may help preserve savings longer.

Steps to take if the 401(k) rule change affects you

If the change applies, continue directing funds to your traditional 401(k) until the $24,500 limit for those under 50 is reached. Confirm your year-to-date total with the plan administrator or human resources department if needed.

After hitting the standard limit, shift remaining contributions to a Roth 401(k) for the rest of the year. Stay within the overall age-based cap to avoid penalties. If a Roth 401(k) is unavailable, explore an IRA or taxable brokerage account instead.
