Space Exploration Technologies (NASDAQ: SPCX), known as SpaceX, launched its initial public offering on June 12. Market participants had long awaited the event.

Since trading began, the share price has moved sharply. The stock debuted at $135 and finished its first session at $160.95. It later peaked at $211.39 on June 16 before falling to $113.29 on July 27.

Short-term forecasts remain unreliable. Looking several years ahead, however, a handful of assumptions can help estimate the 2030 share price and the resulting value of a modest investment.

Unprofitable operations

Although revenue continues to climb, SpaceX remains unprofitable. First-quarter sales rose 15.4 percent from a year earlier to $4.7 billion, yet the GAAP net loss expanded from $528 million to $4.3 billion.

For the full year 2025 the company posted a $4.9 billion loss after earning $791 million in 2024. Revenue grew 33.2 percent to $18.7 billion, but the wider deficit persisted.

The firm runs several lines of business, among them rocket manufacturing and launches, a satellite broadband network, the xAI artificial-intelligence unit, and the X social platform. Only the connectivity division currently generates operating profit. Its quarterly revenue climbed 31.6 percent to $3.3 billion and operating income rose 15 percent to $1.2 million. Space revenue fell 28.4 percent to $619 million while AI revenue increased 12.5 percent.

Projecting future value

Estimating a future stock price requires forecasting revenue and selecting an appropriate price-to-sales ratio. Because the company is unprofitable, earnings-based multiples cannot be used.

SpaceX began trading at a 94 times sales multiple, far above the S&P 500 average of 3.7. Applying a 30 percent annual growth rate through 2030 would lift revenue from $18.7 billion to $69.4 billion. Using the present 78 times sales multiple produces a $5.4 trillion market capitalization, more than three times the current $1.5 trillion level. A $3,000 holding would then be worth roughly $10,800.

More conservative assumptions change the outcome. If the multiple contracts to 30 and revenue expands at a 15 percent average annual pace, 2030 sales would reach $37.6 billion. The resulting $1.1 trillion market cap would leave a $3,000 investment worth only $2,250, a 25 percent decline.

The exercise shows that investors continue to price in rapid sales growth. Failure to deliver could leave shareholders with sizable losses.
