Everyone faces some form of temptation. Energy and mining companies provide clear examples, so with oil prices elevated today largely because of developments in Iran, it is useful to examine corporate temptation in relation to energy stocks, including Occidental Petroleum (NYSE: OXY).

When it reported first-quarter results in May, Occidental informed investors that capital spending is expected to fall by $550 million this year versus 2025, with total outlays targeted between $5.5 billion and $5.9 billion. Yet with oil prices attractively high, the company and its peers may feel pressure to expand production.

High oil prices can act as a temptation. Producers notice the stronger prices and the immediate reaction may be to accelerate activity, but that is not always the wisest approach. Exercising caution can prove more effective. The following explains why Occidental should refrain from increasing production solely due to elevated crude prices.

Steering clear of oil market volatility

With oil prices up more than 30 percent so far this year, producers may feel inclined to lift output quickly. Experienced operators understand that markets can reverse direction rapidly. Crude prices fell sharply last month before climbing once more.

The key issue is that Occidental and similar firms could expand production now, yet by the time meaningful new volumes reach the market, prices might be well below expectations. Investors must weigh this timing risk when evaluating oil stocks.

Volatility also describes relations between the United States and Iran. The recent drop in prices stemmed partly from progress on a peace framework, but last week President Donald Trump declared the agreement finished, sending prices higher again.

Geopolitical tensions clearly influence oil prices. At the same time, such situations can shift abruptly and potentially penalize any producer that expands output too aggressively.

Preserving investor confidence

Occidental shares have risen 30 percent year to date, and the advance reflects more than events in Iran. Company-specific developments matter. The $9.5 billion sale of the OxyChem business to Berkshire Hathaway closed in January, allowing the firm to repay $6.7 billion of debt and remove $550 million in yearly interest costs. Investors appear to recognize these balance-sheet improvements.

It would be wise for the company to protect that support. The stock still trades at a discount to peers, suggesting the market may not fully appreciate the stronger financial position and high-quality assets. A sudden production increase could make it harder to highlight those strengths.

Occidental does not need to expand output aggressively. If Evercore ISI is correct, the company can grow free cash flow by 8 percent annually through 2030 assuming WTI prices at $75 per barrel and may resume share repurchases within two years. Those projections do not rely on materially higher near-term volumes.
