New York manufacturing activity expanded strongly during May, as detailed in a report released Friday by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

The New York Fed reported that its general business conditions index climbed sharply to 19.6 in May, up from 11.0 in April - a positive figure signaling expansion. This rise caught economists off guard, as they anticipated a decline to 7.8.

Marking the strongest reading since April 2022's 20.3, the index highlighted robust regional manufacturing momentum.

New orders also hit a four-year peak, advancing to 22.7 in May from 19.3 the prior month.

Shipments moderated slightly to 18.9 in May from 20.2 in April, yet remained indicative of healthy growth.

Employment edged down to 8.3 in May from 9.8 in April, but the positive level confirmed continued hiring.

Inflation pressures intensified, with both price measures reaching highs not seen since 2022.

Prices paid jumped to 62.6 in May from 51.0 in April, while prices received rose to 31.8 from 21.8 in April.
