Why has Micron historically underperformed?

Understanding the company's path forward requires reviewing its background. Founded in 1978, Micron has provided memory and storage components such as DRAM and NAND flash for uses ranging from PCs to vehicles and mobile devices. Despite broad applications, the memory sector has often proved difficult for long-term holders.

The core issue stems from cyclical patterns, as memory products are largely standardized. Micron chips function similarly to those from competitors in Asia, and combined with high fixed costs plus extended production timelines, this leads to repeated supply-demand imbalances and boom-bust periods.

Micron has posted solid results at times, yet it typically carries a lower valuation than peers because investors worry about sudden margin pressure from excess supply.

Could generative AI change the game?

Generative AI has sharply increased demand for memory components needed to store training data for large language models and to support inference tasks. Analysts forecast that AI data centers could use 70 percent of memory chip output by 2026, while shortages now affect multiple segments and lift Micron's revenue and margins.

Fiscal first-quarter revenue rose 57 percent year over year to $13.6 billion, led by the cloud memory unit serving AI clients. That segment posted a 66 percent gross margin, up from 51 percent a year earlier. Margins are also improving in mobile and automotive areas, with shortages expected to continue into 2027.

What will the next five years have in store?

With shortages projected to last one to two more years, Micron has a limited period to build lasting value. The firm has launched a major expansion, committing $200 billion to U.S. manufacturing capacity and research efforts. This strategy aims to bring operations onshore, reduce external risks, and gain scale advantages once the current surge ends.

Still, the large investment carries risks. Should generative AI prove less durable than hoped, demand growth could slow and create prolonged oversupply that weighs on margins. On a positive note, the forward price-to-earnings ratio of 13 trades well below the Nasdaq-100 average of 25, suggesting the market already accounts for uncertainty while allowing room for growth. Micron stock appears positioned for gains over the next five years.
