Although ambitious, AI adoption remains early stage, with agentic systems offering near-term momentum and physical applications such as autonomous vehicles and robotics presenting further long-term potential. Meta already possesses significant infrastructure scale, positioning it to potentially supply another cloud provider even without prior external sales.

Success will require careful planning around market entry. Established cloud vendors offer broad ecosystems that include developer tools, security features, and additional services. Meta must either replicate these capabilities or identify a distinct approach, perhaps by providing raw compute power to specific clients seeking simplicity over comprehensive offerings. Even a modest presence within the expansive cloud sector could improve returns on Meta's AI-related outlays.

Achieving capacity levels near the tens of gigawatts referenced by Mark Zuckerberg would demand enormous capital commitments. Additional hurdles include securing sufficient power supplies for these facilities. Meta benefits from more than $48 billion in free cash flow generated over the past year through its core advertising operations, which remain highly profitable and expanding.
