A major shift is underway for cannabis firms that promises substantial advantages across the sector.

Back in April the Department of Justice moved medical marijuana from Schedule I status like heroin or LSD down to Schedule III like certain steroids and common prescription medicines such as codeine combined with acetaminophen.

This adjustment removes federal illegality for medical marijuana and allows cannabis companies selling it to claim ordinary business deductions previously blocked by Section 280E of the tax code.

The next step arrives June 29 when hearings start on whether adult use marijuana should also move to Schedule II status which would unlock further tax relief for firms with recreational sales too.

Even this reclassification faces hurdles. Attorneys general from Indiana Louisiana and Nebraska filed a petition in federal court on May 22 arguing the order conflicts with administrative law and international treaties.

Outcomes stay unclear especially around handling past unpaid Section 280E liabilities now listed as obligations rather than debt. Progress also remains limited on the SAFER Banking Act and any exchange uplisting.

While shares of Trulieve and Curaleaf have jumped sharply in recent months other cannabis names offer stronger appeal now with lower risk and healthier balance sheets including Green Thumb Industries and Tilray Brands.

Why Green Thumb Industries Stands Out

Green Thumb operates at a scale comparable to larger peers with 110 RISE dispensaries in 14 markets yet shows superior financial control. It posted profits in six of the last seven quarters a record neither Trulieve nor Curaleaf matches.

First quarter results showed revenue of 300.2 million dollars up 7.4 percent from a year earlier and earnings per share of 0.07 dollars up 75 percent. The firm carries 289.9 million dollars in debt against 344.5 million dollars in cash.

Its brand portfolio helps shield margins from industry wide price pressure. Offerings include RYTHM Dogwalkers Incredibles Beboe and Shine Doctor Solomons and Good Green.

Why Tilray Brands Appeals

Based in Canada Tilray maintains operations across Canada Europe and the United States beverage space. United States regulatory changes would let it expand domestically while improved tax treatment could lift revenue and earnings.

Tilray already maintains a foothold in the United States through acquisitions of craft beer brands from Anheuser Busch and BrewDog. These moves provide a compliant distribution network into retail and bars that can support THC and CBD beverages once federal rules ease and serve as a platform for eventual cannabis sales. The company is also exploring a pilot program to supply hemp derived medical cannabis via healthcare groups and cancer clinics.

Recent results included record third quarter revenue of 206.7 million dollars up 11 percent year over year with international sales surging 73 percent. Debt fell 6 percent to 549 million dollars. Management reaffirmed full year adjusted EBITDA guidance of 62 million to 72 million dollars reflecting 13 to 31 percent growth.

Tilray Offers Overlooked Potential

Because Tilray does not yet sell cannabis in the United States the stock draws less attention than pure play retailers. Its international growth and United States beverage marketing experience position it to seize new domestic opportunities.

The valuation looks attractive with a price to sales ratio of 0.541 below those of Trulieve Curaleaf and Green Thumb.

Green Thumb may represent the steadier choice given its profitability history but Tilray brings distinct advantages and higher upside.
