In the first quarter of 2026, American Express cardmember spending climbed 10 percent, lifting revenue 11 percent and adjusted earnings 15 percent. The company is performing solidly, yet not at the pace of Visa, and that gap matters.

The high end versus the mass market

Visa, by contrast, should see its user base and transaction counts keep rising as more consumers adopt cards. The expansion of online commerce ensures ongoing demand for credit or debit cards.
