Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) has delivered strong performance throughout 2026 with gains near 150 percent, yet it sits well below prior peaks. Shares have fallen about 35 percent from the record high reached at the end of June.

Since that peak the company posted impressive results, including a metric that topped a nearly 15-year-old benchmark. The figures point to a potential recovery and help explain the robust gains of the past year.

Investors Appear to Be Locking In Gains

Intel embodies a genuine recovery narrative. Last year speculation suggested its chip foundry unit might close from lack of customers. Support from the U.S. government and Nvidia has kept the business intact, and Intel now shows clear progress.

That progress appeared in second-quarter results with revenue rising 25 percent, the strongest advance since 2011. The foundry segment expanded 31 percent, meeting investor hopes for renewed momentum. Several more quarters will be required before the market views the turnaround as complete. The shares trade at elevated multiples and will need time to reach more balanced levels.

At 60 times forward earnings and 46 times next year's estimates, the price already reflects much of the near-term improvement. Investors are therefore likely taking profits amid the recent pullback. Such moves are understandable after the substantial advance since government and Nvidia backing was announced.

Still, this does not mark an ideal time to purchase the dip. Sentiment around AI infrastructure spending remains cautious. While views could improve after major technology earnings, worries about potential overbuilding suggest the negative tone may linger and pressure Intel shares further.

Despite delivering the most important update for investors in more than a decade and showing rapid growth, the stock fell. That reaction speaks volumes about current market sentiment, and disciplined investors are likely waiting for stabilization before committing new capital.
