For years, humanoid robots served mainly as technology showcases. They could walk, gesture, and sometimes handle objects, yet widespread commercial deployment remained distant. This situation is changing rapidly.

Several of the world's largest technology companies are investing billions of dollars to bring humanoid robots into factories, warehouses, and eventually homes. Morgan Stanley estimates the global humanoid robot market could reach $5 trillion by 2050.

Yet the biggest opportunities may not lie with the robot makers themselves. Instead, they could rest with firms supplying the AI and computing hardware that every humanoid robot will need.

Nvidia already owns the brains

Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) has emerged as one of the primary beneficiaries of the humanoid robotics surge. While its GPUs already lead in AI training within data centers, the company is extending those strengths into the physical realm via its Isaac robotics platform, Jetson edge computers, and Omniverse simulation software.

Training a humanoid robot closely resembles training a large language model. Before performing real-world tasks, a robot usually learns inside a digital simulation, practicing millions of movements without risking costly hardware. Nvidia supplies much of the computing infrastructure for this process.

The company has also partnered with several robotics developers, including Figure AI, Agility Robotics, Boston Dynamics, and Foxconn, placing its technology at the heart of the emerging robotics ecosystem.

Tesla is building the robot

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) represents a different kind of opportunity. Rather than supplying components, Tesla plans to manufacture humanoid robots itself.

Its Optimus robot has advanced quickly over the past two years, moving from scripted demonstrations to machines that handle increasingly complex tasks. The company is now preparing dedicated production capacity for Optimus at its Fremont factory after repurposing lines previously used for the Model S and Model X. Management indicates this step will support large-scale Optimus manufacturing as output grows over the coming years.

Keep expectations realistic, though. Meaningful revenue from humanoid robots remains years away. Manufacturing a reliable humanoid at automotive scale continues to present a major engineering challenge.

Why Nvidia and Tesla stand out

Dozens of companies are developing humanoid robots. Figure AI, Agility Robotics, Unitree, UBTech, and several Chinese start-ups have all shown strong progress. Most remain privately held, however. Nvidia and Tesla provide something distinct.

Nvidia gains regardless of which robot maker succeeds because many developers depend on its AI hardware, simulation tools, and robotics software. Tesla, by contrast, controls nearly the entire stack itself from AI chips and neural networks to batteries, actuators, manufacturing, and software. If Optimus reaches large-scale commercial adoption, Tesla could capture substantially more value than firms supplying only individual components.

Humanoid robots remain in the earliest stages of development, and setbacks are likely. Still, the industry is moving from research labs into commercial production. While this does not ensure success for every participant, it indicates the opportunity has moved beyond science fiction into manufacturing. Among public companies, Nvidia and Tesla appear best placed to benefit from that shift.
