Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) and Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) currently represent about 70 percent of total cryptocurrency market value. Their long-standing dominance makes it difficult to envision another asset surpassing them in size.

Yet one cryptocurrency stands out with potential based on optimistic analyst projections. That asset is Solana (CRYPTO: SOL), now positioned as the seventh-largest digital currency globally.

Can the numbers align?

Solana holds a market capitalization of 45 billion dollars, compared with Ethereum at 217 billion dollars and Bitcoin at 1.28 trillion dollars.

This places Solana in a challenging position. Reaching 1.5 trillion dollars to overtake both would require roughly a 33-fold valuation increase from current levels.

Solana would need an extraordinary catalyst. Additional spot exchange-traded funds alone will not suffice. The network must deliver capabilities absent from Bitcoin and Ethereum.

Pursuing a 33-fold catalyst

Three years earlier, mobile cryptocurrency access was viewed as the catalyst. Solana introduced a specialized mobile device in 2023 aimed at attracting new participants and boosting activity.

Two years ago, Solana emerged as the preferred chain for meme-based tokens, spurring user growth. However, that trend faded in 2025 once participants recognized the high risk of rapid losses.

Solana has since focused on practical decentralized finance uses for major institutions. It is expanding into stablecoins and real-world asset tokenization, both rapidly expanding segments.

Partners have also advanced prediction platforms and perpetual futures trading. These areas showed strong momentum in 2026 and may represent the breakthrough application needed for substantial scale.

Solana reaching 3,200 dollars?

In October 2023, VanEck projected a potential Solana price of 3,200 dollars by 2030 under optimistic conditions tied to gaining share from Ethereum and launching a widely adopted application with 100 million users.

At the current price near 78 dollars, that scenario implies growth exceeding 40 times, sufficient to surpass Bitcoin and Ethereum combined.

The outcome remains uncertain. Solana has declined 37 percent year to date and must restore momentum. Success could position it as a leading holding for investors.
