Interest rates are projected to move higher before the end of the year according to the Federal Reserve latest economic assessment. In its updated projections released on Wednesday the Federal Open Market Committee raised its year-end federal funds rate expectation to 3.8 percent from the prior 3.4 percent forecast. Interest-rate futures markets now align with that view placing better than even odds on an additional quarter-point increase by September.

Higher inflation yet resilient growth

Inflation itself is not expected to retreat quickly. The committee now anticipates a 3.6 percent inflation rate for 2026 compared with its earlier 2.7 percent projection. Higher rates are therefore viewed as necessary to address these price pressures. Despite these conditions the economy continues to expand at a solid pace. The official statement accompanying the latest policy decision noted that productivity gains capital spending and job growth remain firm while the unemployment rate has stayed largely stable.

Relief arrives with the 2027 outlook

The committee expects inflation to decline noticeably by 2027 and to reach the 2 percent target by the end of 2028. The federal funds rate is also projected to ease during that period toward an average of 3.4 percent. Other borrowing costs such as mortgage rates would follow lower. For investors the key message is that the outlook supports remaining engaged with markets although valuations are elevated and a correction remains possible.
