At June 18's price near $0.17, Cardano (CRYPTO: ADA) sits 94% under its 2021 high and down 48% for the year to date. Rather than signaling an imminent recovery, several indicators suggest the coin's outlook is growing less favorable.

In late May, its community rejected funding for the network's main summit in Singapore. The founder then cautioned about an upcoming "wave of ecosystem failures" and stayed quiet for several days in early June.

Still, it is hard to overlook the presence of an engaged holder base that remains active and influential in the chain's governance, even as prices decline.

So is Cardano undervalued at current levels, or does the price reflect its true position?

What the rejected vote reveals

First, consider the governance decision that halted funding for the summit.

The nonprofit Cardano Foundation, tasked with technical and ecosystem growth, sought 7.8 million ADA from the treasury to stage the 2026 Summit in Singapore. Although the founder supported the plan, it secured only 65.2% approval, falling short of the required 66.6% supermajority and thus failing.

Despite the founder's backing, the chain could not align on financing its own flagship event. This leaves Cardano at a disadvantage compared to rivals such as Ethereum and Solana, which organize and participate in many in-person gatherings to strengthen their ecosystems. More critically, the outcome may indicate that the chain's governance rules, a core part of its identity, prove too stringent for effective use.

On one side, this highlights how holding Cardano grants investors a genuine voice in blockchain direction, potentially enhancing token value much like shareholder voting rights in stocks. On the other, if the process cannot build consensus even for straightforward promotional spending, it raises doubts about handling tougher challenges, such as reviving its weakening decentralized finance segment.

The challenge of value retention

Beyond governance, Cardano faces tokenomics hurdles that complicate investment appeal.

Cardano does not burn transaction fees or conduct token buybacks. As a result, holders lack any direct benefit from heightened network usage. Its staking rewards also derive largely from newly issued reserves, so holders effectively offset supply inflation without net gains.

Thus Cardano may seem inexpensive at first glance, yet closer inspection shows holders receive little beyond voting rights.

This coin is not undervalued.
