Before acquiring an ETF, determine the specific function it will fulfill within your overall holdings.

An investor focused on income generation might examine the Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF (NYSEMKT: SCHD), which follows U.S. firms offering elevated dividend payouts. This fund currently distributes yields exceeding 3%. Those seeking thematic exposure with stronger growth prospects can explore options centered on areas such as artificial intelligence.

For a first ETF addition, the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (NYSEMKT: VTI) provides an excellent foundation. Its clear approach has supported consistent wealth accumulation over time.

Operation of the Vanguard Total Market ETF

This fund aims to mirror the CRSP U.S. Market index, covering the full range of investable U.S. equities. Holdings span large-, mid-, and small-cap companies, totaling nearly 3,500 positions. Nvidia ranks as the largest holding at 6.6% of the portfolio.

While technology dominates the allocation, this may not suit those already concentrated in tech. Nevertheless, the ETF supplies extensive diversification, reliable historical performance, and dividend distributions. Through May 31, it has gained more than 308% over the prior decade, complemented by a 1% yield that enhances overall returns.
