The query came from two seats over on my left. I leaned across and met my oldest daughter's curious gaze.

"Is Bolte superior to Judge?"

She posed the question with an expression of total astonishment. A child who had uncovered something yet struggled to accept her own finding.

Last Friday evening my daughter had devoted the opening innings to studying the center-field display showing team batting averages. Henry Bolte, the Athletics' 22-year-old newcomer, had lifted his mark above .300. The bright figure stood out on the large screen, particularly after I noted an inning earlier that batting .300 ranks as strong. In truth, exceptionally strong in today's game.

(Batters achieved .300 more frequently back in the early 1900s, prior to the widespread shift toward fence-clearing swings that favor home runs or strikeouts. I find this approach dull. Now leave my lawn.)

Aaron Judge, the cornerstone of the New York Yankees batting order, typically maintains solid average alongside power. He is a three-time MVP, captured last season's batting title with the top average in the American League, and routinely hits 50 or 60 home runs annually - matching anyone active. Judge represents a contemporary Babe Ruth.

Judge Stands Roughly Twice the Height and Weight of a Typical Individual

At present he sits at .248 amid a downturn. Still, when Judge approaches the plate cameras emerge and opposing supporters murmur. When Bolte arrives at the box? Honestly, few beyond Northern California Athletics supporters recognize his name.

That noted, we focus on figures here at Contrarian Outlook. So let us voice my daughter's inquiry plainly: does Bolte truly outperform Judge as a hitter?

Batting average tracks how frequently a batter safely reaches base via a hit. It offers one view but fails to reflect the full contribution a hitter makes toward run scoring. Judge functions as a run generator. Bolte? Time will tell.

I expect Judge will soon reach his statistical norms and produce more runs for his club this season than Bolte. This may seem clear, yet it parallels the overstated headline yield that many ordinary dividend seekers pursue: the prominent large yield. The .300 average of dividend territory! Large yield appeals. Modest yield gets ignored.

Yet that yield fails to convey the complete return outlook for a holding - and overall return determines success with dividend stocks. We seek to secure the yield and at least see the price hold steady. Even better if the price advances, allowing capital gains atop collected dividends. We avoid a declining price while receiving the dividend - that equals progress followed by setback.

It forms a costly error.

Observe current market conditions. The 30-year Treasury yield rose near 5.2 percent last month - approaching the peak levels for long bonds since 2007. Extended rates climb amid persistent energy costs sustaining near-term inflation and fresh government borrowing. Retirees nevertheless pursue headline yields and acquire long bonds, utilities, and REITs - all extended-duration holdings that decline when rates increase.

Regular readers recognize my extended view: AI acts as a deflation force. Lower costs, greater speed, higher output - it reduces inflation and ultimately interest rates. I remain firm. Yet "ultimately" carries weight here. Rates shift abruptly rather than smoothly. The path downward passes through jumps such as the present one, and each surge harms long-duration income.

Thus I examined every rate surge over the past dozen years - every interval since 2013 where long-term rates rose a full percentage point or greater. Five instances. The results favor floating-rate holdings over long-duration ones in all five cases - by margins of roughly 8 to 24 points per surge. The blue and orange bars represent combined groups of common floating and long-duration fixed income holdings.

Consider the weakest period: 2022, the poorest stretch for bonds in four decades. The floating group declined just 4.6 percent while the long-duration group dropped near 20 percent. That 20 percent average concealed deeper losses within. The long bond alone - the supposed secure foundation of retirement portfolios - fell around 37 percent.

The floating side? That 4.6 percent dip arrived with increased payouts: distributions rose about 11 percent as underlying loans adjusted upward with rates.

Who receives income that adjusts with rates? Business development companies, or BDCs. View a BDC as an exchange-traded lender: it extends credit to smaller and mid-sized U.S. firms, largely at variable rates. When rates rise the interest collected increases - and the substantial dividend paid to you remains steady.

The straightforward method to hold the full sector is the VanEck BDC Income ETF (BIZD) - one ticker capturing major BDCs in a single package, yielding near 9.3 percent currently. As the bars indicate, it outperformed common income selections across the last five rate increases.

For a standout individual holding my Aaron Judge is Ares Capital (ARCC), the biggest BDC available - and at 10.1 percent today it exceeds the group yield while priced below norms due to recent sector concerns. ARCC concluded the difficult 2022 rate decline up 1.6 percent.

Main Street Capital (MAIN) represents my additional preferred floating option, distributing 8.5 percent. MAIN extends loans yet also acquires equity stakes alongside debt in numerous transactions. This combined approach sets it apart among listed BDCs - and proves rewarding.

In 2025 those equity holdings generated 77 million dollars in realized profits plus 150 million dollars in fair-value gains. This fuels MAIN's monthly dividend increases and occasional extra payouts.

These serve as the run producers within income investing.

BDCs carry no special protection from difficulty. They lend to leveraged firms, and extended high rates eventually pressure certain borrowers. The sole factor that disrupts the BDC strategy is a broad default wave - one that compels lenders to reduce loan values and receive less interest. We stand far from that point now. Yet we monitor credit standards closely. And as noted, I do not anticipate rates remaining high indefinitely.

My oldest now grasps the distinction between batting average and run production. Will dividend investors similarly recognize the gap between long-duration and floating-rate strategies? When they do, we will hold our positions already.

They will recognize it in time, so we contrarians should acquire the strongest payers immediately. The best floating-rate selections, purchased at suitable moments, generate double-digit dividends that preserve value amid rate shifts - the sort that can convert 500,000 dollars into lasting income.
