Shares of CoreWeave (NASDAQ: CRWV) fell over 11% on Friday following the release of its first-quarter earnings. This pullback occurred after a strong rally, with the stock nearly doubling in value during 2026 leading up to the report.

The decline was not driven by the headline figures, which appeared robust at first glance. Revenue more than doubled, the contracted backlog neared $100 billion, and fresh agreements with Anthropic, Meta, and other AI leaders piled up.

However, investors focused on accompanying details. Second-quarter guidance fell short of expectations, capital expenditure plans increased, and profitability metrics worsened. Even with shares up about 60% year-to-date after the drop, the debate centers on whether this represents a buying opportunity for optimistic investors.

Bookings Stay Strong

First-quarter results reinforced the case for sustained demand in specialized AI infrastructure. Revenue jumped 112% year-over-year to $2.08 billion, accelerating slightly from the 110% growth in Q4 2025, and rose 32% from the previous quarter.

Bookings stole the show, however. The company secured over $40 billion in new commitments, pushing the contracted revenue backlog to $99.4 billion from $66.8 billion at year-end 2025. Roughly 36% of this is slated to turn into revenue within two years, and 75% within four.

Customer diversification is improving as well. CEO Michael Intrator noted 10 clients each committed to at least $1 billion, including a multi-year pact with Anthropic and an expanded $21 billion deal with Meta. This contrasts with Microsoft representing 62% of 2024 revenue.

Reasons the Pullback Falls Short

Despite solid bookings, the disconnect between future commitments and current financials is growing. The Q1 net loss widened to $740 million from $452 million in Q4 2025 and $315 million a year ago.

Part of this stems from operations. CoreWeave is aggressively expanding infrastructure, and new capacity starts with negative margins until utilization ramps. Intrator highlighted this on the earnings call: "[I]f you think of it as we're running 50 megawatts, and we add 300 megawatts in a quarter, the impact on gross margin is going to be enormous."

These expansions demand heavy spending. Capital outlays reached $6.8 billion in the quarter, with full-year guidance raised to $31 billion - $35 billion against steady revenue projections of $12 billion - $13 billion. Debt servicing adds pressure too, with net interest expense at $536 million and shares outstanding nearly doubling to 527 million.

Valuation remains a key issue. At a $62 billion market cap - roughly five times projected annual revenue - amid absent profits, high leverage, and rising share count, the recent dip may not sufficiently balance risks and rewards. The bookings story impresses, but the price implies near-flawless execution for years, offering slim room for errors.

That noted, CoreWeave could still prove a compelling long-term play. Its leveraged setup might fuel sharp earnings growth upon profitability, though the same factors could amplify pain if expansion falters.

Is this a buy-the-dip for CoreWeave? Not for conservative investors. Risk-tolerant ones betting on the AI surge's early stages might see potential.
