Americans want the Iran conflict wrapped up, above all those feeling the pinch from higher fuel costs, and many now see a path to relief at the pump.

At the same time, the agreement leaves many convinced that core strategic and economic aims fell short and that the overall price was too high.

Most respondents believe Iran's nuclear efforts have not been permanently halted and expect continued threats to neighboring countries.

Even within the president's Republican base, support is not uniform.

The public also doubts that the Trump administration views its goals as fully met; instead, the emphasis appears to be simply on stopping the fighting.

Consequently, only a small share think the United States came out ahead in the new deal.

Few believe the effort has made Iran's population safer or replaced its leadership with one friendly to Washington, aims that many once considered important.

Views on Iran's Future Role

A majority expect Iran to keep pressuring its neighbors.

Many also conclude the conflict has not justified its costs.

On balance, few credit the outcome with advancing American economic or strategic interests.

Divisions Among Republicans

Some splits appear inside the president's party over next steps.

Four in ten Republicans want the fighting to continue until Iran concedes more; this group largely rejects leaving the current regime in place.

Republicans remain divided on whether the nuclear program is truly stopped, whether regional threats have ended, and whether the agreement favors the United States or represents an even trade.

Timing and Public Reaction

Most Americans think the administration underestimated global economic fallout.

They also sense the timing reflects a desire to exit rather than a belief that all objectives were reached.

Still, the chance of lower gas prices has helped steady the president's approval ratings and his marks on handling the Iran situation.

As prices climbed earlier, his standing slipped; the agreement produced a modest one-point rebound, driven mainly by non-college White voters who expect fuel costs to ease.

Those most burdened by higher prices are the most eager to end the war now.

Looking Ahead

Hopes for an end rest partly on expectations that gas prices will fall rather than keep rising.

Yet four in ten still fear Iran could again threaten the Strait of Hormuz.

Public assessments of Iran's overall strength remain mixed: just over a third see it as weaker, while a similar share see little change.

Beyond fuel costs, concern over Iran's nuclear program stays high.

Half the public says it is unacceptable to conclude the conflict while current leaders remain in power, a view tied to fears of continued regional threats.

Given these uncertainties and unmet aims, more Americans believe the conflict created problems than solved them.

This CBS News/YouGov survey was conducted with a nationally representative sample of 2,519 U.S. adults interviewed between June 17-19, 2026. The sample was weighted to be representative of adults nationwide according to gender, age, race, and education, based on the U.S. Census American Community Survey and Current Population Survey, as well as 2024 presidential vote. The margin of error is plus or minus 2.4 points.
