Given that Bitcoin has declined over 25 percent this year, it comes as no shock that many investors are exiting the crypto space. They seek stronger prospects in areas like artificial intelligence and space ventures.

Yet it may be premature to dismiss Bitcoin entirely. Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan views the current moment as a pivotal shift, suggesting Bitcoin could climb substantially higher before the year concludes.

The optimistic outlook for Bitcoin

It is admittedly becoming more difficult to build a strong case for Bitcoin. As Hougan notes, Bitcoin now has one main application: serving as a store of value.

Bitcoin is positioned as digital gold, a secure asset that protects against inflation and global tensions. If this holds true, why has Bitcoin fallen sharply this year?

According to Hougan, investors should adopt a long-term view of Bitcoin instead of fixating on brief fluctuations. Bitcoin moves through four-year cycles of expansion and contraction, requiring patience during slower phases. When stronger periods arrive, gains come in force.

Recall the last Bitcoin downturn. In 2022 the asset dropped 64 percent, prompting many to exit just as some are doing today. Yet 2023 and 2024 brought triple-digit gains that silenced doubters.

Over the longer term, Bitcoin has performed solidly as a value store. It has risen 10,000 percent over the past decade. In contrast, the U.S. dollar has lost 28 percent of its value in the last six years alone. This offers reassurance to those who see Bitcoin as a digital counterpart to conventional currencies.

What substantially higher truly implies

Even while Bitcoin lingers below 70,000 dollars, many analysts project it could reach 100,000 dollars or more by year end. Investment firm Bernstein, for instance, has reaffirmed its 150,000-dollar target.

That would imply roughly 135 percent upside from current levels. With warning signs emerging for high-priced AI and space stocks, some investors may shift back toward Bitcoin for its growth potential.

Therefore I remain positive on Bitcoin. Although prediction markets assign only a 16 percent probability of surpassing 100,000 dollars this year, the four-year cycle appears to be entering a bullish phase, and I aim to capture the initial gains.
