When leading crypto exchange-traded funds begin to experience outflows, many market participants instinctively consider exiting their positions as well. Spot Bitcoin ETFs have seen roughly $3 billion in redemptions over ten straight trading days, with the iShares Bitcoin Trust taking the largest share of those withdrawals. The situation intensified on May 26 when an unknown seller offloaded more than $1.2 billion worth of shares in that fund at a 2.3 percent discount, incurring an approximately $30 million loss to exit quickly. Such rapid large-scale selling by prominent holders often signals caution.

Even so, periods like this frequently present favorable entry points for investors with a longer horizon. The underlying characteristics of the cryptocurrency remain unchanged. Those willing to wait may find this an attractive moment to accumulate. The following explains the rationale.

Outflows appear less severe upon closer examination

Ongoing tensions in the Middle East and the risk of wider economic disruption likely account for most of the selling pressure. Although cryptocurrency markets do not have direct exposure to oil prices or other key commodities affected by events such as a potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the high level of uncertainty has prompted many investors to shift toward safer assets and reduce exposure to volatile holdings like digital currencies.

Placing the recent activity in perspective is also useful. Spot Bitcoin ETFs continue to manage approximately $105 billion in assets, while cumulative net inflows since the January 2024 launch total around $55 billion. A single week of adjustments driven by external events does not erase nearly two years of institutional adoption through these ETF structures.

ETFs represent only one factor influencing available supply

During the same period when spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded outflows in May, publicly traded companies increased their holdings by 51,000 BTC, led by Strategy which purchased 25,404 BTC. SpaceX, ahead of its planned IPO, also revealed an 18,712 BTC position through regulatory filings. This combined total exceeds three times the amount produced by Bitcoin miners throughout the month.

New daily supply stands at just 450 BTC, and the halving scheduled for April 2028 will reduce that rate by half once more. While ETF flows can shift quickly based on the actions of individual large holders, corporate treasury purchases and the built-in scarcity mechanism follow longer and more predictable timelines.

Consequently, the current environment offers a reasonable window for increasing Bitcoin exposure. Establishing a dollar-cost averaging plan, limiting the allocation to a size that accommodates potential volatility without undue concern, and committing to a multi-year horizon allows the asset's structural scarcity to support returns over time. Bitcoin's longer-term trajectory will be shaped by steady holders rather than those reacting to near-term fluctuations.
