Canadian stocks are expected to open on a mixed note Monday morning.

An earthquake occurred off the coast of Port McNeill in British Columbia, with its epicenter in the Pacific Ocean at a depth of 10 km below the seabed. No tsunami warning has been issued.

Gold, silver and copper prices are moving higher, while crude oil is also advancing. Natural gas prices are easing.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index closed lower by 0.0084, and the S&P/TSX 60 Index finished at 1,415.97.

European shares are trading mostly lower. France's CAC 40 Index is down 10.05 points or 0.13 percent. Germany's DAX is off 56.08 points or 0.30 percent, while the U.K. FTSE 100 Index is up 2.76 points or 0.03 percent.

The Swiss Market Index is declining 21.91 points or 0.18 percent.

The Euro Stoxx 50 Index, comprising 50 blue-chip stocks from the eurozone, is lower by 0.25 percent.

Attention this week will focus on the U.S. Fed's monetary policy decision, along with reports on retail sales and industrial production.

U.S. major averages closed firmly higher on Friday. The Dow rose 297.01 points or 0.7 percent to 41,393.78, the Nasdaq gained 114.30 points or 0.7 percent to 17,683.98 and the S&P 500 advanced 30.26 points or 0.5 percent to 5,626.02.

On the economic calendar, the Empire State Manufacturing Index for September is due at 8:30 a.m. ET. Forecasts call for a reading of minus 3.9, compared with minus 4.7 in the previous month.

The Treasury Buyback Preliminary Announcement is set for 11:00 a.m. ET.

The six-month Treasury bill auction will take place at 11:30 a.m. ET.

Asian stocks finished mixed on Monday. Markets in China, Japan, South Korea and Indonesia remained closed for holidays.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rose 0.3 percent to end at 17,422.12.

Australian markets closed higher. The S&P/ASX 200 Index gained 0.3 percent to 8,121.60, while the All Ordinaries Index advanced 0.2 percent to 8,341.10.
