My Approach to Addressing the Solvency Crisis

The Reformer tool lists major policy options for modifying Social Security. Users can select or deselect them to observe effects on income, costs, and trust funds. Most choices shrink the shortfall, though some expand it while offering higher benefits.

I began with a less disruptive fix: removing the taxable maximum on payroll taxes. In 2026, taxes apply only to the first 184500 dollars earned, allowing high earners to avoid contributions on excess income.

Lifting this limit would require wealthy individuals to pay taxes on all earnings, matching ordinary workers. Pairing it with higher benefits for them would close 44 percent of the 75-year shortfall, while skipping benefit increases would cover 61 percent.

This provided a solid foundation, but adding the option to tie cost-of-living adjustments to the Consumer Price Index for the Elderly instead of the current index increased the shortfall by 11 percent, as it better matches senior expenses.

These steps covered half the gap, yet further options proved limited.

Every Path Affects Everyday People

Remaining strategies all carried drawbacks. Benefit cuts or higher taxes on them would burden retirees. Raising payroll rates or the full retirement age would challenge workers. No choice felt entirely satisfactory.

This mirrors the dilemma in Washington. Any resolution will likely disappoint millions, underscoring why the decision carries such weight.

I am prioritizing controllable steps like consistent work, steady contributions, and controlled spending. Adjustments may follow any official fix, but core habits remain essential.
