Officials calculate provisional income to decide if benefits are taxable. This figure includes adjusted gross income plus nontaxable interest and half of annual Social Security payments. For instance an adjusted gross income of fifty thousand dollars plus twenty-four thousand dollars in benefits creates provisional income of sixty-two thousand dollars.

These taxes can reach thousands of dollars. Because the income thresholds are not adjusted for inflation more retirees face them each year.

A new six-thousand-dollar senior deduction available through 2028 may offer temporary relief for those age sixty-five and older who have valid Social Security numbers. It does not alter the taxable share of benefits but can lower the final tax amount.

Most states leave Social Security benefits untaxed

Most states do not tax Social Security benefits. Only eight states continue to do so for some residents. They are Colorado Connecticut Minnesota Montana New Mexico Rhode Island Utah and Vermont.
