What does Intuitive Surgical do?

Intuitive Surgical produces the da Vinci surgical robot system. At the close of the first quarter of 2026, 11,395 systems operated worldwide, up 12 percent from the first quarter of the prior year. In short, despite the share price drop, the medical device firm's product keeps selling at a solid pace.

Yet a second metric deserves attention. Procedures using a da Vinci system rose 17 percent year over year. That indicates more surgeries now rely on a da Vinci robot. Patient demand therefore stays robust as well.

These patterns will vary from quarter to quarter. Still, the overall outlook stays clear. Intuitive Surgical's operations rest on solid ground. This explains why investors accept a premium valuation. Its price-to-earnings ratio stands at a high 51x, a level that appeals mainly to aggressive growth investors. Even so, the P/E sits well below its five-year average of 70x.

The opportunity is not limited to robot sales

What stands out, however, is that Intuitive Surgical draws only about 25 percent of revenue from da Vinci system sales. The balance arrives from instruments, accessories, and services. That forms the engine of the business, and with steady demand for robotic surgery it acts like an annuity-style revenue source. The stream expands with every new da Vinci placement. This is not merely a sound business; it is a robust one. The da Vinci system keeps advancing and secures regulatory clearance for additional surgical applications. That opens further paths for sustained growth.

Yet the stock has slipped 30 percent in a brief span. Growth investors should pause and view the decline in context. As the chart below shows, this healthcare firm's shares have fallen at least 30 percent eight times since its initial public offering. Each time the price recovered and reached fresh highs. While no one can guarantee the same outcome now, and some declines exceeded 30 percent, history suggests the current drop may prove temporary.

Moving in while Intuitive Surgical shares seem to decline sharply will not feel simple. It calls for strong confidence in the company's core strength. Still, new system sales remain healthy, and parts and services revenue benefits from ongoing patient interest in robotic surgery. Even if new da Vinci placements ease, the sizable installed base will continue to deliver meaningful revenue.
