The Hub forms part of four Innovation Hubs created throughout Ohio to promote innovation-led economic expansion. Upon completion, projections indicate roughly $161.6 million in economic benefits, 450 fresh positions, 185 new STEM credential programs, and 40 internship slots by 2029.

This milestone arrives as Ohio earned the top ranking for business climate in CNBC's 2026 America's Top States for Business list, advancing from fifth place the prior year.

Ohio Lt. Governor Jim Tressel joined the event and offered comments.

"This occasion goes beyond simply updating a structure. It centers on creating prospects for Ohio residents," Lt. Governor Tressel noted. "The Mahoning Valley has long been shaped by individuals who build, address challenges, and persist in pursuing improved outcomes. This Innovation Hub extends that legacy while readying upcoming workers for sought-after roles in manufacturing."

Leaders from the Hub and YBI also addressed attendees.

"The start of construction for the Youngstown Innovation Hub signifies far more than beginning renovations. It shows the results possible when state, local, industry, academic, and community groups unite on a common goal for manufacturing progress, aerospace, and defense advancements," stated Megan Malara, Ph.D., director of the Youngstown Innovation Hub.

Renovation efforts received support from a $750,000 state capital allocation. Ohio State Sen. Al Cutrona and state Rep. Lauren McNally aided in moving the funding request forward. YBI acknowledged additional Lake to River delegation members, including state Reps. Nick Santucci, Tex Fischer, Monica Robb Blasdel, Dave Thomas, and Sarah Fowler Arthur, along with U.S. Sens. Jon Husted and Bernie Moreno for their backing.

Event speakers featured Ohio Lt. Gov. Jim Tressel; Lydia Mihalik, director of the Ohio Department of Development; Mary Mertz, director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources; Julius Oliver, 1st Ward Councilman for the City of Youngstown; State Sen. Al Cutrona; State Rep. Nick Santucci; State Rep. Lauren McNally; and Megan Malara, Ph.D. Barb Ewing, CEO of YBI, acted as master of ceremonies.

The City of Youngstown, which provided $1.35 million in local matching funds, had representation present. John Wilczynski, executive director of America Makes, attended, and Barb Ewing highlighted Kimberly Gibson and Alexander Steeb of America Makes for their contributions.

Once finished, the five-story, 130,000-square-foot concrete structure will provide adaptable areas for offices, work zones, and exhibits, plus strong power infrastructure for various high-need occupants. Security elements, such as restricted entry points and separated manufacturing sections, align with U.S. Department of Defense contracting standards, enabling tenants to pursue federal defense contracts directly.
