These steps support U.S. growers in delivering safe and affordable food, feed, fiber, and fuel

The Weed Science Society of America (WSSA) praises the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its recent proposals involving six new herbicide registrations.

"The WSSA values the efforts of EPA's Office of Pesticide Programs along with its dedicated scientists in moving forward with evidence-based pesticide registration choices," notes Ian Burke, Ph.D., WSSA president. "Prompt availability of reliable and secure crop protection options matters greatly so that U.S. farmers can utilize advanced technologies that foster productive and sustainable agriculture, especially while addressing herbicide-resistant weeds and related production issues."

Ongoing, open, evidence-driven evaluation remains vital to confirm these products are applied properly, safely, and per EPA-approved guidelines, Burke adds. "The EPA's dedication stands out more clearly than before in recent days," he observes.

The six proposed herbicide registrations are as follows:

Diflufenican: EPA issued a final rule with a 60-day comment period in the federal register on June 30, 2026. The rule sets tolerances for corn and soybean applications.

Epyrifenacil: EPA released a final rule with a 60-day comment period in the federal register on June 30, 2026. The rule sets tolerances for field corn (forage, grain, stover), rapeseed (seed), soybean (forage, hay, seed), and wheat (forage, grain, hay, straw).

Florpyrauxifen-benzyl: EPA shared the document "Memorandum Supporting Proposed Decision to Approve Registration for the First Residential Use of Florpyrauxifen-benzyl" along with related materials for public input from 6/26/2026 to 7/11/2026.

Isoxaflutole: EPA shared the document "Memorandum Supporting Proposed Decision to Approve Registration for the Cotton New Use and Geographic Expansion of Soybean Use of Isoxaflutole" along with related materials for public input from 06/26/2026 to 07/27/2026.

Topramezone: EPA received an application to register topramezone, an HPPD inhibitor (Group 27) herbicide for broadleaf weed control including Palmer amaranth and other pigweeds. Related materials are open for public input from 06/26/2026 to 07/27/2026.

Trifludimoxazin: On June 30, EPA shared its response to final public comments on trifludimoxazin. This systemic Group 14 protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO) inhibitor herbicide addresses both broadleaf and grassy weeds in key crops such as soybeans, corn, and cereals. It stands out for managing PPO-resistant weed populations and offering pre-emergent plus burndown control.

The EPA moves align with President Trump's Executive Order promoting regenerative agriculture and farm resilience, which called on EPA to facilitate access to modern farming products via timely review and registration approval. "WSSA thanks President Trump for emphasizing prompt, evidence-based regulatory actions through his Executive Order," states John Byrd, Ph.D., WSSA's EPA Liaison. "His steps acknowledge that crop protection products play a key role in adopting regenerative agriculture methods, such as planting cover crops to enhance soil health."

Stanley Culpepper, Ph.D., WSSA's past president and current Science Policy Chair, agrees. "The outcomes of these priorities will aid family farms in supplying safe and affordable food, feed, fiber, and fuel for our country and beyond," he notes. "These actions will further assist weed scientists in creating and applying safe, effective weed management strategies with added variety and sustainability across numerous crops."
