Merced recorded nearly a 50 percent fall in traffic deaths after starting its red-light safety effort.

Broader figures reveal that red-light safety camera programs cut fatal red-light-running crash rates by 21 percent in major cities, whereas places that ended such programs saw a 30 percent rise in these incidents. Even with these gains red-light running continues as an expanding hazard. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that deaths tied to red-light runners have climbed almost 60 percent in the past ten years, moving from 711 in 2014 to 1,119 in 2024.
