/PRNewswire/ -- The Executive Leadership Council (ELC) announced today the selection of Crystal L. Brown to serve as its Chief Engagement Communications and Marketing Officer. Brown will manage The ELC marketing brand strategic communications public relations executive visibility digital engagement and storytelling activities supporting the advancement of the organization mission strengthening membership connections and raising the profile of its programs partnerships and external presence.

Brown arrives at The ELC with a strong history of developing trusted brands directing effective communications and marketing groups enhancing organizational standing and steering institutions during phases of expansion and change. Her professional experience covers nonprofit higher education philanthropic mission focused entities along with corporate settings where she has advised chief executives presidents boards and senior leadership groups.

Most recently Brown held the role of Chief Communications Marketing and Brand Officer at National Geographic Society where she directed the brand marketing and communications operations. Serving on the executive leadership team she promoted the Society mission via coordinated plans that boosted public involvement reinforced brand value and highlighted the reach of its education conservation exploration and narrative projects. Her direction aided a landmark fundraising effort reinforced brand alliances and steered communications during organization wide change initiatives.

Before this Brown acted as Vice President and Chief Communications Officer at Howard University serving on the President Cabinet and as senior advisor amid a key phase of institutional evolution. She also became the first Chief Communications Officer at the University of Maryland acting as university spokesperson and aiding the elevation of the university national standing.

Earlier Brown occupied senior leadership posts at communications and consulting companies counseling clients from various sectors on strategic communications brand placement and stakeholder relations. Her client list featured groups such as the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the National Education Association.

Outside her leadership positions Brown supports education and leadership growth. She currently sits on the University of Virginia Alumni Association Board of Managers and formerly chaired the National Education Association Foundation Board of Directors served as Vice Chair of the Ridley Scholarship Fund and participated on the DreamBox Learning Advisory Board.

Brown holds a Bachelor of Arts in Rhetoric and Communications from the University of Virginia.
