Serena Shim Award recipient Vanessa Beeley earned widespread respect for her direct reporting on the Syrian conflict from 2011 to 2024 that questioned prevailing press narratives.

In December 2024 Beeley had to leave Syria after the removal of President Bashar al-Assad who was succeeded by Mohammed al-Jolani a figure with past al-Qaeda links and support from the Trump administration.

On May 14 Beeley stated on the Uncontrolled Opposition radio program that daily conditions for Syrians have become considerably harsher than during the Assad period.

With Wahhabi fighters from numerous countries now dominant the nation faces mounting debt through IMF financing she noted. Payment systems such as Mastercard and Visa have returned along with fast-food chains yet power supply remains more limited than before and job opportunities are scarce. Non-Wahhabi workers especially Alawites and Druze face dismissals while recent rules bar Druze students from the national education system.

Beeley observations highlight the inconsistency of American outlets and commentators who long echoed official claims against Assad yet now ignore hardships under the current US-backed authorities.

The present difficulties also reveal the damaging effects of the CIA-backed Timber Sycamore program that funneled substantial resources to bolster al-Jolani forces.

Beeley recalled the clean-break strategy in which US and Israeli planners targeted Iraq first as a step toward Damascus noting that weakening Syria was essential because it formed the core of the resistance network linking Iran Iraq Lebanon and Palestine while also producing arms for allied forces.

She added that the seven-country list outlined by Wesley Clark placed Iran last because it presented the greatest challenge and that efforts to destabilize Syria had persisted since independence in 1946 with the country holding out for fourteen years during the recent war.

Although policymakers view the Syria operation as successful Beeley observed that supply routes persist because the installed al-Qaeda-style government staffed by foreign fighters shows little interest in blocking paid shipments and only occasionally stages publicized interdictions.

A key US figure active in Syria is Tom Barrack a real-estate investor and Trump donor named special envoy and ambassador to Turkey who has pursued major Gulf investments in the country.

Beeley described Barrack arriving to secure substantial funds from Gulf states seeking influence in Syria noting his prior role as CEO of Colony Capital and his background in Middle East dealings.

With external actors again extracting economic resources and using the territory for proxy operations Beeley suggested al-Jolani may soon be replaced because he cannot unify the country given competing interests among his associates and the prevalence of foreign fighters in his ranks.

When asked about a successor Beeley indicated it would likely be a secular Sunni figure based abroad possibly in France or the United States with the name Firas Tlaas mentioned as a candidate.

Tlaas a businessman formerly close to Assad who later joined opposition ranks and received an in-absentia sentence in France for financing militants is viewed as a neoliberal who could advance external commercial and strategic goals following a familiar pattern that has produced widespread harm in Syria.
