HAMPTON - Officers responded to 29 Ocean Boulevard in Hampton after a report of shots fired early Sunday morning and located a 23-year-old man along with a 25-year-old woman who had both sustained gunshot injuries, then came upon a man who had shot himself in the head, based on a news release issued by Attorney General John Formella.

The injured pair were transported to a hospital for treatment following the events that unfolded around 1:19 a.m. Sunday.

"At the intersection of P Street and Ashworth Avenue, Hampton Police Department officers made contact with a suspect who matched the description of the person who shot the male and female. During that interaction, the male pulled out a handgun and raised it. He then shot himself in the head while an officer fired one gunshot contemporaneously. The male, identified as Tyshawn Cooper, 21, of Taylors, South Carolina, was declared deceased at the scene," the release said.

On July 5, an autopsy was performed on the body of Tyshawn Cooper. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that Cooper's cause of death was a gunshot wound to his head and that the manner of his death was suicide.

No law enforcement officers were injured during this incident. Although the officer that fired did not cause Cooper's death, the Attorney General's Office will complete a deadly force incident investigation, the release said.

No further information is expected to be provided until the identity of the officer using deadly force is disclosed following formal interviews, which are expected to occur sometime next week.

The exact circumstances of the incident remain under active investigation.
