Bellingcat has verified video evidence of Shahed-136 style kamikaze drones active in Mali through geolocation techniques.

Earlier accounts from Defence Blog and France 24 noted the use of these drones in northern Mali combat zones. Bellingcat along with Jeune Afrique then authenticated two recent attacks via geolocation, satellite data and specialist review, yielding some of the strongest public proof yet of their field deployment.

The incidents occurred in Inafarak on July 12 and Talahandak on July 17. Although precise identification of the model remains limited, specialists indicated to Bellingcat that Russian production is probable, given the presence of the state-directed Africa Corps and ongoing Russian military assistance to Mali.

Leo Jarry, a drone specialist at Tungsten Strategies, stated to Bellingcat: "Should these drones prove Russian-made, they signal clear Russian backing for Mali."

Initial reports of Russian drones in Mali surfaced in May after Defence Blog released images of wreckage from attacks near Savare.

France 24 recently located remnants of multiple Russian drone systems in Mali, highlighting a growing Russian drone footprint. Prior to this, however, no confirmed recordings existed of Shahed-136 style drones in flight striking targets.

Mali has faced ongoing turmoil since a northern rebellion began in 2012. In recent times Russian forces, initially via the Wagner Group and later its successor Africa Corps, have aided the Malian Armed Forces in actions against Tuareg rebel factions and jihadist groups.

Inafarak - July 12, 2026

On July 12, video of the results from a drone attack in Inafarak appeared on X.

Bellingcat matched the video to the settlement near the Algerian border (21.32330, 0.72980) using satellite views. Confirmation came from comparing a post-attack satellite image from July 15 with 2024 imagery, revealing multiple structures intact in 2024 but destroyed by July 15, 2026. The destruction aligned with scenes in the located footage. The attack targeted a commercial site, where a damaged truck and many ruined fuel barrels were evident.

One clip displays engine remnants resembling an MD-550, a unique four-cylinder two-stroke engine used on the Shahed-136 drone series. The engine image was reviewed by weapons experts Trevor Ball, an independent analyst and former Bellingcat investigator, and Leo Jarry, who confirmed consistency with the Shahed-136 family. The part also matches MD-550 references from the Open Source Munitions Portal and the war and sanctions component database.

The X footage was shared again by the Wagner- and Africa Corps-linked Telegram channel “White Uncles in Africa”, known for racist memes and graphic content previously covered by Bellingcat.

The channel described the videos: “Now the Azawadi ‘khokhols’ will be seeing Gerans all the time.” “Geran” denotes the Russian-built Shahed-136 variant. The message applies the offensive Russian term “khokhol” for Ukrainians to residents of Azawad, the Tuareg separatist name for northern Mali.

Talahandak - July 17, 2026

On July 17, graphic video of another Shahed-136 style drone strike appeared on X, depicting a casualty and a burning truck. A further clip of the vehicle shows what look like cooking oil bottles spilling out, suggesting a commercial load.

Bellingcat located these videos in Talahandak (20.26369, 1.80095), also near the Algerian border roughly 100 miles southeast of Inafarak, by aligning buildings with satellite imagery.

Soon after, a Wagner-linked X account asserted the drone had been downed by rebels before striking the truck. The post included footage of a Shahed-type drone in flight.

The footage of the drone’s final descent was geolocated to another section of Talahandak nearly a kilometer away (20.266907, 1.792656) from the impact site.

A clear smoke plume rises from the impact point in multiple videos posted soon after the strike.

Bellingcat verified each video and matched the plume, further confirming the in-flight drone recording is genuine.

The video shows the drone heading straight to the spot where the person and truck were hit, with no sign of interception before contact.

A New Weapon Raises New Risks

The Shahed-136 comprises long-range one-way attack drones first created in Iran and now produced in Russia. In contrast to drones commonly employed by Mali’s forces such as the Bayraktar TB2, which release small precision munitions and return, one-way attack drones detonate on impact and can reach farther since recovery is unnecessary.

Leo Jarry noted that the drone gives Africa Corps and FAMa an “expendable, cost-effective” long-range strike option, enabling hits in Mali’s remote north beyond Bayraktar TB2 range. “The relatively cheap and expendable nature of these systems alters operator risk assessments,” Jarry said. “They can be deployed more readily, potentially compelling northern Mali insurgents to adjust to a fresh aerial threat.”

Yet Jarry observed the system is less accurate than the Bayraktar TB2 as it cannot confirm targets mid-flight and depends on separate surveillance to locate and follow targets pre-launch. “In Mali, where armed groups move quickly and often mix with civilians, any delay between target spotting and impact raises the chance of hitting the wrong site.” Paired with the drone’s bigger warhead, this heightens civilian risk in or near populated zones.

From Ukraine to Sahel

Russian forces have deployed Shahed-136 type drones widely in Ukraine for long-range strikes on civilian infrastructure, resulting in civilian deaths. Their arrival in Mali suggests similar operational patterns may transfer to this conflict.

The introduction follows Bellingcat’s and Jeune Afrique’s recent report on banned Russian cluster munitions used in Mali.

Malian forces and Africa Corps encounter rising pressure in northern Mali amid rebel offensives. Clashes have escalated recently, with rebels seizing several bases and reportedly causing heavy losses to both FAMa and Africa Corps.

Jarry indicated the low cost and expendable design of these drones suit them well for retaliatory actions after rebel attacks.
