In Contrast U.S. Public Systems Face Decay or Privatization to Corporate Interests

After arriving in Miami a TSA officer inquired about my recent travels. When I mentioned Nicaragua he wondered whether residents there faced widespread poverty. The question caught me off guard yet I responded directly noting that poverty exists while also highlighting that families in modest tin-roof homes gain access to high-quality free health care and university education.

The passport agent exhaled and shared his own reluctance to seek medical attention due to high costs. He concurred that meaningful reform remains necessary back home.

I had completed a three-week journey across Nicaragua largely alongside a group arranged by Casa Ben Linder a Managua organization focused on fostering global solidarity. Participants from the Black Alliance for Peace which advances anti-war and anti-imperialist stances within radical Black communities also helped enable the visit.

Nicaragua remains a lower-income nation repeatedly targeted by U.S.-backed hybrid tactics such as harsh sanctions and military actions. Even so since the Sandinista Front regained authority in 2007 the government has steadily expanded infrastructure and essential services for long-marginalized populations.

These efforts encompass fresh water networks low-cost public transit tuition-free higher education and expanded rural power access. At the same time American public infrastructure often deteriorates or shifts into private hands.

Joining the delegation offered fresh insight into how central the state can be when delivering core services. U.S. progressives stand to gain by examining how Nicaragua deploys state capacity for social gains compared with domestic patterns.

Political Shifts Across Nicaragua

Nicaragua began modern infrastructure development relatively late. From an elevated vantage in Managua guides noted that prior to the 1979 Sandinista overthrow of the Somoza regime city sewage flowed untreated into Lake Managua posing serious health risks.

The revolution promptly launched a nationwide literacy drive and universal free health coverage. Over the initial eleven years U.S.-backed Contra forces killed roughly 42,000 Nicaraguans while deliberately striking educators health workers and Ben Linder himself the activist whose organization coordinated my visit.

Linder an American circus performer and engineer relocated to Nicaragua in the 1980s to contribute skills to the emerging revolution. Rural children knew him for his unicycle juggling routines that promoted measles vaccination. He was constructing a small hydroelectric facility in a northern village when U.S.-armed Contras killed him in 1987.

The Contra conflict slowed yet failed to halt forward movement. In the 1990 election however a right-wing neoliberal bloc defeated the Sandinistas whose base had grown exhausted by prolonged warfare.

The succeeding administration governed for sixteen years and prioritized alignment with U.S. regional dominance over public investment. It privatized services and reversed earlier revolutionary gains.

Since the Sandinista return in 2007 steady advances have resumed. One early project installed a wastewater treatment facility for Managua that markedly improved lake conditions.

I toured a recently completed municipal water system serving hillside residents outside Ciudad Sandino. Families previously relied on costly ox-cart deliveries; now gravity-fed taps supply homes at far lower expense and greater volume enabling one household to launch a tree nursery that aids reforestation.

Managua features new reinforced-concrete roadways built for longevity and paired with dedicated subsidized bus lanes where a single ride costs about seven U.S. cents. Additional inter-regional routes now link previously isolated areas.

The Caribbean coast long remained disconnected from Pacific cities under the Somoza era. A newly finished highway now permits affordable overland travel replacing costly flights or multi-day river journeys and fostering economic and educational ties.

Three universities in Bluefields offer tuition-free professional programs. URACCAN leaders described expanded state backing since 2007 that has grown enrollment to 5,800 students and extended outreach classes to remote communities.

Electrification on the Caribbean coast has risen from roughly 25 percent coverage before 2007 to near 95 percent today. Even isolated Garifuna settlements such as Orinoco receive solar arrays and diesel generators though full 24-hour service remains a goal.

Bluefields itself is installing citywide sewage lines. Over one week crews replaced a block of pavement with new piping and fresh concrete an effort residents say will reduce groundwater contamination from aging septic systems.

A Radical Social Project?

Improving living standards involves more than physical infrastructure alone. Nicaragua like every society harbors internal tensions and competing interests.

A capitalist class continues to operate alongside state-led socialist measures and extracts profit from labor. Commercial billboards and diesel exhaust remain common sights while the government balances relations with domestic business elites wary of deeper economic transformation.

At the Gloria Quintanilla Cooperative in the Managua hills however a women-led coffee-producing settlement founded in 2008 with ATC support illustrates more far-reaching change. Ninety families govern their own affairs on collectively titled land and prioritize community needs over market logic.
