Sunshine alone cannot fix every challenge facing residents.

A recent study from Tulane University researchers with the State of the Nation Project reveals a concerning view of despair, low mood and loss across New Mexico.

The fresh State of the States analysis, issued this month, reviewed thirty years of figures from every state and the District of Columbia. It placed New Mexico in the lower third for vital indicators of mental health, overall contentment and community bonds.

The study aims not only to spotlight shortcomings in places like New Mexico but also to spur officials into positive steps, noted Douglas Harris, project director and Tulane economics professor.

We drew inspiration from the upcoming 250th anniversary of the nation, Harris explained during an interview. States can learn from one another in this laboratory of democracy. The goal is to encourage action on the biggest issues ahead.

New Mexico often lands near the bottom in national lists on social topics. The state recently lost its long standing last place position in child well being statistics.

Even so, the latest findings present a stark view of daily life. New Mexico came in 36th for depression rates and 45th for youth depression. It ranked 43rd in life expectancy, 45th in overdose deaths, 47th in suicides and 48th in volunteer rates.

The data align with ongoing public safety discussions, as the state placed 49th in homicide figures and 47th in shooting incidents.

New Mexico also stood at 45th for social isolation, reflecting the share of adults lacking regular emotional support.

These mental health markers carry wide effects on overall wellness. Gabrielle Dietrich, head of the New Mexico National Alliance on Mental Illness chapter, linked them to early hardships such as home or community violence, substance problems and family disruptions that harm later outcomes.

Like other Mountain West states, New Mexico shows elevated shares of residents reporting two or more such early hardships, per State Health Access Data Assistance Center numbers.

Such early experiences matter greatly, Dietrich noted. They shape current conditions and build across generations.

Positive developments include recent legislative moves. Lawmakers approved measures in 2025 to expand access to mental health and addiction services.

The state now sits in what Dietrich termed the messy middle phase of putting reforms into practice.

We are in Act 2, where efforts grow complex, she said. Knowing the issues and working on solutions marks the tough yet rewarding stage.

Some encouraging notes appear in the data. Economic output is rising, with an eighth place ranking in labor productivity. Environmental factors such as air quality and emissions sit near average, along with voter turnout and child death rates.

Harris urged focus on areas within reach. A doctor could target birth weights, social workers youth mental health, and groups volunteer efforts.

No single person can address every item, he added. Pick one area and track progress without feeling overwhelmed.

Daily connections between people can ease isolation, Dietrich said, calling community the remedy.

Progress takes time and patience, reflection and listening, she concluded.
