New certification defines and verifies handcraft to empower artisans, brands, and shoppers

Nest, a nonprofit dedicated to the worldwide craft sector, has unveiled its Nest Verified Handcrafted mark. This consumer-facing certification highlights products made through clearly outlined handcraft processes.

Nest coordinated a multi-stakeholder effort to create precise, industry-aligned definitions for handcraft methods. The definitions give craftspeople and brands a structure to inform consumers and affirm the worth of handmade goods. The Verified Handcrafted program tackles inconsistent uses of terms like handcrafted and counters misuse that can reduce the value of artisan skills and prospects.

The Verified Handcrafted program was shaped with major brands including Williams-Sonoma, Inc., Tory Burch, and DÔEN. Products carrying the Nest Verified Handcrafted mark feature home decor selections at Pottery Barn, West Elm, and other Williams-Sonoma brands, DÔEN's hand-crocheted Etna Anniversary Dress, and Tory Burch's hand-embellished mirrorwork items.

Nest's framework centers on production methods. A product counts as handcrafted when hand or hand tools complete most of the work. The more power tools or machines assist or substitute human skill, the lower the likelihood the process qualifies as handcrafted.

The Nest Verified Handcrafted mark complements Nest's Ethical Handcraft program and its Ethical Handcraft Seal.
