/PRNewswire/ - National Press Club President Mark Schoeff Jr. issued the following statement today regarding the incident:

"The National Press Club strongly denounces the assault on Washington Post photographer Heidi Levine.

Levine suffered a brutal attack while performing her essential role as an independent journalist by documenting developments in the West Bank. We are relieved to learn she is now getting the necessary medical care.

Reporters must never face targeting amid conflicts or in any location. An independent press requires freedom from violence to operate effectively.

The Israeli government needs to launch a thorough probe of this event and ensure accountability for those involved. Such an aggressive incident must not remain unaddressed, as that could endanger additional journalists by prompting further attacks on the media."
