The National Press Club President Mark Schoeff Jr. issued a statement on the Justice Department's decision to subpoena journalists at The New York Times.

"This action by the Justice Department should concern every American because it endangers the constitutional right to an independent press that serves the public."

The National Press Club urges the Justice Department to withdraw these subpoenas at once and uphold a core American principle that a free press serves the people rather than the government.

All citizens need to recognize what is involved here. When federal agents deliver subpoenas to journalists at their homes this goes beyond routine enforcement and represents a serious attack on press freedom that undermines the First Amendment.

The First Amendment safeguards the public's access to an independent press. Government use of investigative tools against journalists undermines a vital check on those in power.

The real risk lies not only in the subpoenas but in the signal they send. Sources may choose silence. Whistleblowers may hesitate. And the public ends up with less information about the government that represents them.

A government secure in its conduct has no reason to avoid independent examination. A free press asks tough questions, reveals difficult truths and keeps citizens informed. The Constitution shields this role because democracy requires an independent press to hold power accountable."
